It’s Christmas, which means a time for gifts, food and spiked egg nog. It’s a time for reflection, for looking back at the year that was.
It’s also a time to look forward.
2011 promises to be an intriguing year in mixed martial arts. The UFC/WEC merger means we’ll get a bunch of exciting new fights and limits the amount of dull moments we’ll have on pay per view cards. We might get to see Fedor Emelianenko fight again, if only the buffoons at M-1 Global would stop insisting on spending their free time renegotiating The Last Emperor’s contract after every fight. We might see a bonafide superfight between Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva.
Today, I’d like to know what YOU would like to see in 2011. Have a dream fight you’d like to see? Want to see either of the big two USA promotions make changes to the way they do business? Tell me about them in the comments.
I’ll get you started:
Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva: Everybody wants to see this fight, and chances are pretty good we’ll at least start working in this direction in 2011. St. Pierre must get past Jake Shields in April, and that’s no foregone conclusion. But if he does dispatch Shields, there are few compelling bouts left for the welterweight champion in his current division. It will finally be time for him to put the weight on and make a run at the UFC middleweight title in a dream fight with Silva.
Urijah Faber, Dominick Cruz coaching TUF: It’s the perfect way to highlight two of the bigger stars available from the WEC merger. There’s no love lost between Faber and Cruz. Some of it stems from the fact that Faber is the only man to ever beat Cruz, but some of it is personal. Throw your two best bantamweights on the show, let them coach whatever weight class is featured during the season and then let them headline a pay per view at the end.
